Pilot training was often very difficult under the best of conditions, primitive aircraft, terrible
weather, bitter cold, etc.. It is understandable
that many accidents occurred in these conditions
with only two eyeballs to navigate, hand signals
and lights, flares to communicate with aircraft in
flight or on the ground--with the instructor hunched over shouting instructions through the
talk tube it was inevitable Smashups occurred.

In a letter home to his Sister, Gus said
that while groping his way through a
heavy snow squall to the airfield struck
a tree and ripped off his lower left wing,
the R.C.A.F. fined him $ 100.00.
